Der Tod Jesu – Polish Royal Opera

The work was commissioned by Frederick II's younger sister, Princess Anna Amalia, who commissioned Karl Wilhelm Ramler (1725-1798) to write the libretto. Since its premiere in March 1755, the work has resounded annually in Berlin, enhancing the celebrations of Holy Week. This tradition remained alive until the late 19th century, when Graun's work was replaced by J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion.
